IntroductionCompetition for water resources is a critical challenge globally and in Iran, exacerbated by climate change threats. Medicinal plants, such as Zataria multiflora (Shirazi thyme), represent vast divine potential and, with proper planning, can play a special role in the non-oil economy. This species, native to rocky habitats, possesses limited global distribution and significant antibacterial, antifungal, and therapeutic properties, including proven anti-stress effects. Meanwhile, the application of cow manure as a biological fertilizer enhances soil porosity and organic matter. This improvement leads to better soil fertility, physical and chemical properties, and water retention capacity, thereby facilitating root expansion and the absorption of water and nutrients. Consequently, this results in improved growth and yield. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of irrigation levels and cow manure on the growth and canopy production of Shirazi thyme under field conditions in Mashhad.Materials and MethodsThe experiment was conducted in the research fields of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad during the 2020-2021 growing season. A factorial experiment was designed within a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments included three irrigation levels (3000, 2100, and 3900 cubic meters per hectare) and four cow manure levels (41.76, 52.2, 62.64 tons per hectare, and a control with no manure). Key morphological traits and yield components were measured, including plant height, leaf area index (LAI), and biomass. Results and DiscussionReducing irrigation volume had a negative impact on the morphological characteristics of Shirazi thyme, such that the number of lateral branches, plant and stem height, leaf area index, major and minor diameters, weight (plant, leaf, stem, and flower), and total yield decreased. One of the probable effects of drought stress on plant dry weight can be attributed to the reduction in leaf area due to physiological factors occurring within the plant. In this experiment, the treatment of 2,100 cubic meters per hectare reduced leaf area by 47% compared to the treatment of 3,000 cubic meters per hectare. In this regard, it is likely that the reduction in photosynthesizing surface area and the consequent decrease in photosynthates led to a reduction in leaf weight. Furthermore, with the reduced allocation of photosynthates to the stem—which serves as the structural support for the aerial parts of the plant—its weight also decreased, consequently leading to a reduction in plant height. As a result, aerial growth was restricted, the canopy diameter and number of lateral branches diminished, and the plant ultimately suffered from growth retardation and a reduction in dry weight. Cow manure application notably enhanced the lower canopy diameter and the wet and dry weight of flowers. For example, the irrigation treatment at a rate of 3,900 cubic meters per hectare yielded the highest flower dry weight compared to other levels of manure application at 12 grams per square meter; this amount represented a 100% increase compared to the control. No significant interaction between irrigation and manure treatments was observed on most traits, suggesting independent effects of each factor.ConclusionBoth irrigation and cow manure significantly impact the growth and yield of Shirazi thyme. Adequate irrigation is essential for maintaining high biomass and essential oil production, while cow manure improves soil fertility and plant health. These findings highlight the importance of integrated water and nutrient management for optimizing medicinal plant cultivation in arid regions. For farmers in similar climatic conditions, a balanced approach to irrigation and organic fertilization is recommended to maximize yield and maintain soil health. Future research should explore the long-term effects of these practices on soil properties and plant health, contributing to more sustainable and productive agricultural systems.

IntroductionWater is one of the most important environmental factors that has a significant impact on the growth and development as well as the accumulation of active ingredients in medicinal plants. Low amounts of water during plant growth stages can cause irreparable damage to the growth and development as well as the active ingredients in plants. Irrigation interruption is a desirable solution for crop production under water shortage conditions. In principle, plants selected for irrigation interruption should be resistant to water shortage stress and its effects on growth and yield at different growth stages should be carefully examined. Soil nutrient management is of particular importance in the production of medicinal plants. On the other hand, moisture deficiency stress, as the most important factor limiting production, leads to a decrease in plant yield. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of animal manure on grain yield, grain components, and essential oil yield of black cumin (Nigella sativa) under irrigation interruption conditions.Material and MethodsThe experiment was conducted as a split-plot arrangement within a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications at the Research Farm of the Campus of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Razi University, in 2022. The treatments included fully rotted sheep manure (0, 10, 20, and 30 t ha-1) as the main plot and irrigation interruption (complete irrigation, interruption of irrigation from flowering stage, interruption of irrigation from grain filling stage) as the subplot. The final harvest was carried out at physiological maturity based on the observation of external symptoms, which included yellowing of the plants and lower leaves, browning of the follicles, and blackening of the grains (due to moisture loss). The measured traits included plant height, number of main branches, number of follicles, number of grains per follicle, 1000-grain weight, total dry weight yield, grain yield, essential oil percentage, essential oil yield, and harvest index. In order to data analyze, the SAS statistical software version 9.1 was used. First, the normality of the data was confirmed, the variance analysis of the data was performed using the GLM procedure, and then the least significant difference test was used to compare the means. Results and DiscussionThe interaction of manure application and irrigation interruption on yield and grain yield components was significant. The highest 1000-grain weight (1.69 g), total dry weight yield (251.5 g m-2), grain yield (108.7 g m-2), and grain essential oil yield (18.7 g m-2) and the lowest 1000-grain weight (1.39 g), total dry weight yield (125.3 g m-2), grain yield (44.3 g m-2), and grain essential oil yield (8.2 g m-2) were observed in the treatment of 30 ton ha-1 of manure and complete irrigation, and the treatment of no manure application and interruption of irrigation from the flowering growth stage, respectively. The results suggest that higher rates of manure application and irrigation enhanced black cumin grain yield by improving yield components, including the number of grains per follicle and 1000-grain weight. Grain yield was positively and significantly correlated with total dry matter yield, harvest index, number of follicles m⁻², number of grains per follicle, and 1000-grain weight.ConclusionIn general, the results showed that in order to achieve maximum grain yield and grain essential oil yield, the treatment of 30 ton ha-1 of manure and complete irrigation was better. However, under the application of 30 t ha⁻¹ of manure, no significant difference was observed between irrigation interruption at the grain-filling stage and full irrigation. Therefore, irrigation can be terminated at the grain-filling stage without reducing grain or essential oil yield, thereby decreasing overall water consumption in the field.

IntroductionGolestan province is one of the main areas of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) production in Iran. Expanding faba bean cultivation in rotation with wheat, rapeseed, and other cold-tolerant plants, due to the valuable characteristics of this plant, can improve the sustainability of cropping systems and bring other important benefits. Weeds are considered a major problem in faba bean production and cause significant losses in grain and green pod yields. Cultivation of cover crops along with modification of agricultural practices, especially planting arrangements, can be a suitable solution for controlling weeds.Materials and MethodsIn order to investigate the effect of cover crop and row spacing on some soil properties, yield, and yield components of faba bean, a field experiment was conducted as a factorial in a randomized complete block design with three replications in two crop years 2021-22 and 2022-23 at the research farm of Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. The first factor of the experiment included the use of cover crops at the levels of 1- rye (Secale Cereal L.), 2- parsley (Petroselinum crispum L.), 3- berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.), 4- hairy vetch (Vicia villosa L.), 5- no cover crop with the use of haloxyfop R-methyl ester + bentazone herbicides, 6- no cover crop in conditions of weeding of weeds, and 7- no cover crop in conditions of no weeding of weeds. The second factor was the distance between faba bean rows at three levels (37.5, 50, and 62.5 cm). Cover crops were planted simultaneously with faba beans and rolled 100 days later. In the second year of the experiment and at the end of the faba bean growth period, soil sampling was performed to determine the soil organic matter content and microbial respiration. Result and DiscussionBefore rolling, the highest and lowest leaf area (and dry weight) among the different cover crops were observed in rye and parsley. In the study of the dry weight of weeds 52 days after rolling the cover crops, it was indicated that the residues of rye and parsley had better potential for controlling weeds in both crop years than the residues of hairy vetch and berseem clover. The lowest number of pods per plant was recorded at a row spacing of 37.5 cm. Among the treatments, the highest number of pods per plant was observed in the no–cover crop treatment under weeding conditions, as well as in the rye and parsley cover crop treatments. In contrast, the lowest number of pods per faba bean plant was recorded in the no–cover crop treatment under no-weeding conditions and in the hairy vetch cover crop treatment. Row spacing and cover crop treatments had no significant effect on the number of seeds per faba bean pod. With increasing row spacing, the weight of one hundred faba beans increased. The highest weight of faba bean pods was observed in the control treatments without cover crop under weeding conditions and with parsley cover crop planting, respectively, with 121.61 and 120.47 g. The highest biological yield was observed in the parsley cover crop (and residue) treatment at 9313 kg ha-1, which was not far from the control treatments without cover crop in weeding conditions (9279 kg ha-1) and rye cover crop (8364 kg ha-1). The highest grain yield was observed in the row spacing of 37.5 cm and the lowest in the row spacing of 62.5 cm. The lowest grain yield after the cover crop treatment in the no-weeding condition was observed in the hairy vetch treatment. The highest organic carbon and soil microbial respiration was observed in the cover crop treatment in the no-weeding condition and the lowest in the cover crop treatments in the weeding condition. Among the treatments of undercover crops, the highest amount of organic carbon and soil microbial respiration was observed in the hairy vetch treatment and the lowest in rye. ConclusionIn general, the results of this study showed that the use of different cover crops can have different effects on weed populations, soil properties, and crop yield. Based on the results of this study, to achieve the desired yield of faba bean-Mehta variety, it is recommended to plant parsley at a row spacing of 37.5 cm.

IntroductionWheat is the most important strategic crop both globally and nationally. It is one of the most critical staple crops in Iran, playing a vital role in food security and economic stability. However, its production is highly sensitive to climatic fluctuations, including temperature changes, precipitation variability, and extreme weather events. In semi-arid and arid regions such as Khorasan Razavi province, where agriculture is heavily dependent on climatic conditions, understanding yield trends and their underlying drivers is crucial for optimizing production and ensuring sustainability. This study aims to analyze the spatiotemporal variations in irrigated and rainfed wheat yield in Khorasan Razavi over an 11-year period (2011–2021) across 29 counties and identify key climatic and management-related factors influencing these changes. The findings provide essential insights into the spatial and temporal patterns of yield fluctuations and help inform adaptive strategies for mitigating agroclimatic risks.Materials and MethodsThis study was conducted in Khorasan Razavi province, located in northeastern Iran, covering 29 counties with diverse climatic and agronomic conditions. The data for this study were obtained from the Agricultural Jihad Organization's website, including annual yield records for irrigated and rainfed wheat. To model the yield trends, polynomial functions were employed. Linear, quadratic, and cubic regression models were applied, and the best-fitting model was selected using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). Based on yield trends, counties were classified into four classes: (1) Increasing, where yield has shown a significant and consistent upward trend; (2) Stagnating, where yield has remained relatively stable with no substantial increase or decrease; (3) Never Improved, where no significant improvement in yield was observed throughout the study period; and (4) Collapsed, where a sharp decline in yield occurred. The spatial distribution of yield variations was also analyzed to identify regional patterns. Results and DiscussionThe results of the study showed that in Khorasan Razavi province, the average irrigated wheat yield increased by about 1000 kilograms per hectare (kg ha-1) over an 11-year period. However, this increase was not uniformly distributed across all counties; in half of the counties, an improvement in yield was observed, while in the other half, stagnation or no improvement in yield was observed. Furthermore, only one county experienced a significant decrease in yield. Regarding rainfed wheat, the average yield over the 11-year period increased by about 800 kilograms per hectare (kg ha-1), indicating the product's sensitivity to environmental and management factors in different regions of the province. Spatial analysis revealed that the pattern of wheat yield changes across the province was heterogeneous; central counties such as Torbat Heydarieh, Fariman, and Nishapur experienced yield improvements, while areas like Khushab and some northern and southern counties faced decreases, stagnation, or no improvement in yield. Temporal variation charts showed that both types of wheat (irrigated and rainfed) were influenced by long-term climatic and management changes. Overall, management practices in the province have led to yield improvements, but in some counties, climatic changes and severe weather fluctuations, especially in the final year of the study, neutralized the positive effects of agricultural management, resulting in stagnation or no improvement in wheat yield. This study investigates the variations in precipitation and temperature over the agricultural years 2011 to 2021, with precipitation ranging from 60 to 430 mm and mean temperature varying between 10°C and 22.5°C. Significant fluctuations in both factors are highlighted, particularly the severe drought in 2020-2021 (the final year of the study), which had a notable impact on agricultural productivity. This suggests that even with improved farming techniques, climate adaptation measures including changes in sowing date, drought-resistant cultivars, soil moisture conservation techniques, and enhanced irrigation systems are necessary to sustain long-term productivity. Also, several counties classified as Collapsed, Stagnating or Never Improved may require additional investment in agricultural extension services, farmer training, and climate-smart agricultural practices to bridge the yield gap.ConclusionThe results emphasize the need for adaptive management strategies to enhance wheat yield stability in Khorasan Razavi. Although agronomic improvements have led to yield increases in many areas, the effects of climate fluctuations remain a major challenge. Policymakers and agricultural planners should prioritize climate adaptation measures, such as changes in sowing date, improved irrigation techniques, using drought-resistant crop varieties, and precision agriculture, to mitigate climate-related yield losses and ensure sustainable wheat production in the region.

IntroductionMaize (Zea mays L.) is considered as one of the best forage crops due to its adaptability to various climatic conditions, as well as its production of suitable forage per unit area, high quality of silage, and high absorbability in livestock. Suitable planting date is one of the important factors in determining the yield potential of crops especially in maize, and also the use of methanol and glycine spraying increased plant growth, especially in delayed crops. For this purpose, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of methanol, glycine, and their interaction on three different planting dates on maize in Simorgh city, Mazandaran, Iran. The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of methanol and glycine on delayed planting dates and whether or not foliar spraying of these compounds can reduce the negative effects of late planting in maize.Materials and MethodsThis study was carried out as a factorial in the form of randomized complete block design with three replications at three separate fields in the promotional research farm of Jihad Agricultural Center, Simorgh city, Mazandaran province, on fodder maize as the second crop after rice harvest during summer and autumn of 2020. The maize hybrid used was Single Cross 201. The treatments were composed of glycine at three levels: [0 (control), 1 and 2 mg l-1], methanol at three levels: [0 (control), 10 and 20% v/v], and three planting dates: [August 6, 16 and 27]. Foliar spraying of maize plants with methanol and glycine solutions was performed in three times during the growing season, including the 4-6 leaf stage, 8-10 leaf stage and before tassel emergence stage, at time of 9-11 am.Results and DiscussionThe results of this study showed that the highest values of dry matter yield of maize fodder was 1944.59 kg ha-1 that related to the interaction treatments of methanol 20 % spraying and glycine 2 ppm spraying in planting date of 6.8.2020. Use of methanol and glycine spraying and also the increasing of their concentration increased the yield and physiological and morphological characteristics of fodder maize. Delay in maize cultivation (27/8/2020) reduced its yield and physiological and morphological characteristics. The highest amount of dry fodder yield 19415.59 kg ha-1 was related to the interaction effects of methanol 20% v/v and glycine 2 mg l-1 on the planting date of August 6 and the lowest dry fodder yield was related to the control treatment 2568.76 kg ha-1 on August 27. The use of methanol and glycine partially reduced the negative effects of the delayed maize planting. Determining the appropriate planting date for crops is of particular importance because it affects the traits and various stages of growth and development and optimizes the efficiency of using environmental factors affecting yield. Delaying maize planting reduces the yield, which is due to a shortening of the vegetative growth period and a decrease in the amount of carbohydrates and minerals transferred to the grain. Methanol increases plant performance by affecting various metabolic pathways such as growth and development and activating genes involved in jasmonic acid biosynthesis and plant defense mechanisms. The use of glycine has increased ear yield due to the production of amino acids during nitrogen metabolism.ConclusionMethanol and glycine application reduced the negative effects of delayed planting of forage maize on August 27. The application of methanol 20% v/v and glycine 2 mg L-1 on August 27 was able to increase the dry yield of forage by 168% compared to the control on the same planting date, which can be attributed to the increase in plant growth rate by methanol and glycine. Therefore, to increase the yield of forage corn and reduce losses due to late planting, application of 20% by volume methanol and 2 mg L-1 glycine can be recommended in humid climate areas similar to Mazandaran. However, for a more detailed study, higher concentrations of methanol and glycine can also be recommended.

IntroductionCereals, as the most important food group in the world, are a rich source of nutrients including lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, minerals and vitamins and constitute a major part of human nutrition. Also, cereals contain dietary fiber and bioactive components with beneficial properties for improving health. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is one of the most important cereal crops grown worldwide and is rich in protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. This product is of interest to farmers due to its special chemical composition and health benefits. Sheep manure, as suitable alternatives to chemical fertilizers, supply plant nutrients and contribute to the sustainability of agricultural ecosystems. Zeolite is one of the most commonly minerals used to increase agricultural production. The zeolites, due to their structure and porosity, are well-suited for retaining the nutrients and gradually releasing them into the root zone. Therefore, this research was carried out with the aim evaluation of the effect of organic fertilizer and zeolite on some quantitative and qualitative traits of dryland barley.Materials and MethodsThis experiment was carried out factorially in the form of a basic design of randomized complete blocks in 3 replicationsin 2021-2023 cropping years in the farm of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University Azad, located in Kamalvand section of Khorramabad city. The studied factors included four levels of sheep manure (0, 3, 6 and 9 ton ha-1) as a source of organic phosphorus and four levels of zeolite (0, 4, 8 and 12 ton ha-1). The studied farm soil is a loamy clay soil with a high clay content, which has a high ability to retain water and nutrients, but has poorer drainage than loamy soils with a lower clay content. The use of sheep manure as a rich source of organic matter helps improve water retention capacity, soil aeration, permeability, and erosion reduction, and increases soil stability. The traits studied in this experiment included measuring grain yield, number of grain per spike, number of spike m-2, 100 grains weight, harvest index, grain protein and some nutritional elements in grain and forage ( N, P and K).Results and DiscussionThe results indicated that the application of sheep manure and zeolite at moderate rates improved all measured traits. The highest 1000-grain weight (45.62 g), grain yield (2997.75 kg ha⁻¹), and harvest index (34.28%) were obtained with the application of 3 t ha⁻¹ of sheep manure. In addition, the application of 4 t ha⁻¹ of zeolite, compared with the highest rate (12 t ha⁻¹), increased 1000-grain weight, grain yield, and harvest index by 11%, 22%, and 14%, respectively. The interaction effect of sheep manure x zeolite showed that the highest number of grain per spike (21), the number of spike m-2 (1069), grain nitrogen (2.05%) and grain protein (11.93%) from the combination of 3 ton ha-1 of sheep manure and 4 ton ha-1 of zeolite. Also the most grain phosphorus (0.37 %) and grain potassium (1.78 %) were obtained from the combination of 6 ton ha-1 of sheep manure and 4 ton ha-1 of zeolite. ConclusionIn general, the results of this study showed that the use of manure and zeolite can increase plant yield. Zeolite acts as a soil conditioner and manure as a source of nutrients, and the combination of the two can improve soil quality, increase nutrient absorption, and ultimately increase plant growth and yield.AcknowledgementWe would like to express our gratitude to the respected professors and staff of the Agronomy Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Khorramabad Azad University, for their guidance and assistance throughout the project.

IntroductionThe growing global awareness of the environmental and health risks associated with synthetic chemicals has renewed interest in natural resources for pharmaceuticals, industry, and sustainable dye production. Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria L.), a member of the Fabaceae family, has re-emerged as a crop of interest due to its dual medicinal and industrial value. Traditionally cultivated in Iran, indigo leaves yield a stable natural blue pigment widely used in textiles and cultural heritage preservation. Although synthetic dyes largely displaced indigo in the nineteenth century, contemporary ecological and economic challenges have revived its importance as an eco-friendly alternative. Indigo thrives in warm, frost-free environments but is highly sensitive to both cold and heat stress, particularly during reproductive development. In semi-arid regions such as Shushtar County, Khuzestan Province (Iran), high summer temperatures, soil salinity, and water scarcity impose major constraints on cultivation. Sowing date and plant density are key agronomic factors that determine how crops adapt to these stresses by influencing phenological development, reproductive success, and resource use efficiency. This study aimed to assess the effects of sowing date and plant density on reproductive traits and seed yield of indigo under semi-arid conditions to identify optimal management strategies for sustainable production.Materials and MethodsTwo field experiments were conducted over two consecutive seasons (2022–2023) at distinct sites: Shahid Bahonar Agricultural School (Year I) and Shahid Sharafat Greenhouse Complex (Year II). Both experiments employed a split-plot design within a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Sowing date was assigned to main plots, and plant density to subplots. In 2022, six sowing dates (April 29, May 19, June 8, June 28, July 18, and August 7) were evaluated in combination with four plant densities (30, 40, 50, and 60 plants m-²). Late sowings (July–August) performed poorly and were excluded in 2023, when only the first four dates were tested with the same densities. Seeds of the local Jiroft ecotype, known for resilience in arid environments, were sown directly in sandy loam soils. Initial soil analysis in 2022 indicated alkaline conditions (pH 7.56, EC 2.04 dS m-¹), which improved in 2023 (pH 7.18, EC 1.59 dS m-¹). After thinning at the 3–4 leaf stage, stands were adjusted to target densities, and manual weeding was conducted throughout the season. Standard agronomic practices were followed, including furrow irrigation and basal fertilization with urea, diammonium phosphate (DAP), and potassium sulfate. Measured traits included pods per plant, seeds per pod, thousand-seed weight (TSW), and seed yield (g m-²). Grain yield was harvested from the central subplot area to avoid border effects. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, least significant difference (LSD) test at 5% probability, correlation analysis, and interaction analyses with SAS v9.4 and SPSS v26.Results and DiscussionSowing date imposed a much stronger effect than plant density on reproductive performance and yield (p< 0.01). The earliest sowing date (April 29) consistently produced the highest yields: 105.3 g m⁻² in 2022 and 114.2 g m⁻² in 2023. In contrast, the latest sowing (August 7) yielded only 47.5 g/m², representing more than a 50% reduction. Delayed sowing after mid-July exposed plants to severe heat stress during flowering and pod filling, shortening the growing period and sharply reducing reproductive output. Plant density significantly interacted with sowing date (p< 0.05). Medium density (40 plants m-²) maximized yield by balancing efficient resource use with minimal competition. Higher densities (≥60 plants m⁻²) intensified intra-specific competition, reducing yield by 10–12%, particularly under late sowing. Conversely, very low densities (<30 plants m-²) underutilized available resources. Among yield components, pods per plant showed the greatest sensitivity. Under optimal conditions (early sowing, 40 plants m-²), plants produced up to 126 pods, but this decreased by 45% with late sowing due to heat-induced pod abortion. Seeds per pod also declined sharply (from 9.8 under early sowing to 5.9 under late sowing), reflecting high-temperature stress during pollination and seed set. In contrast, TSW remained stable (4.42–4.59 g) across treatments, indicating strong genetic control and limited responsiveness to environmental or management factors. Correlation analysis confirmed that seed yield was strongly associated with pods per plant (r= 0.94) and seeds per pod (r = 0.87), whereas TSW had only a weak relationship (r = 0.32). Thus, reproductive structure abundance was the primary driver of yield variability. Year-to-year comparisons demonstrated notable improvements in 2023. Reduced soil salinity (EC decline from 2.04 to 1.59 dS m⁻¹) and lower pH enhanced nutrient uptake and physiological efficiency, supporting greater pod and seed set. Additionally, exclusion of late sowing dates in 2023 minimized exposure to extreme heat stress, further improving performance relative to 2022.ConclusionThe results highlight the decisive role of sowing date in determining reproductive performance and yield of Indigo under semi-arid conditions. Early sowing (April 29) combined with moderate density (40 plants m-²) consistently improved yield and reproductive efficiency, while delayed sowing and high densities markedly reduced performance. The year-to-year improvement further demonstrated the positive contribution of enhanced soil quality to reproductive success. Overall, this study emphasizes that precise agronomic management—particularly early sowing and optimal density—ensures stable and sustainable indigo production in hot, stress-prone environments. Given the growing global demand for natural, eco-friendly dyes and medicinal plants, these findings provide a strong scientific basis for the revival and expansion of indigo cultivation in Iran and similar semi-arid regions.

IntroductionGiven that weeds are opportunistic plants that grow faster than crops and absorb available nutrients more easily and better, and as a result, they are considered strong competitors for crops. Weeds are opportunistic plants that grow faster than crop plants and absorb available nutrients more easily and better, and as a result, they are considered effective competitors of crops. Therefore, balanced use of inputs, especially fertilizers, can play an important role in controlling weeds growth. Hence, the use of nutrients to reduce the effect of competition between weeds and crops has also been considered in various studies. In other words, increasing plant growth through proper nutrition leads to stronger crop plants with more shading, and increases the competitive power of crops in using environmental resources such as water and light, and this leads to their superiority over weeds. There is little information in literatures about competition between safflower and its relative weeds, such as milk thistle. Thus this research was aimed to compare yield and yield components of these plants under different potassium fertilizer and weed densities.Materials and MethodsTo investigate the effect of weed density and amount of potassium fertilizer on growth characteristics and dry matter allocation in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) under competition with milk thistle (Silybum marianum L.), an experiment was conducted in March 2023 at the Research Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Birjand. The experiment was done as a factorial arrangement based on a randomized complete block design with two treatments and three replications. The experimental factors were different levels of potassium (0, 34, 68, and 136 kg K2O ha-1, which corresponds to 0, 75, 150, and 300 kg potassium sulfate ha-1) and milk thistle density at four levels (0, 4, 8, and 16 plant m-2). At harvest time, yield and yield components of both crop and weed were measured. Finally, statistical analysis of the data was performed using SAS 9.1 and comparison of means was performed based on the FLSD test at 5% probability level. Results and DiscussionThe results showed that with applying 34 and 68 kg K2O ha-1, safflower yield increased more than that of milk thistle, compared to the control. Further increase in potassium sulfate after that, although it also increased safflower yield, was more in favor of milk thistle, which showed a higher percentage increase compared to the control. In both safflower and milk thistle plants, the highest yield was obtained by applying 136 kg K2O ha-1, so that the grain yield at this potassium level was increased by 124.2 and 141.4 percent for safflower and milk thistle, respectively, compared to the control. The results also showed that increasing potassium application caused a greater increase in the traits of capitulum diameter, number of seeds per capitulum, and seed weight per capitulum of milk thistle than safflower, compared to the control. Furthermore, an increase in weed density led to a drastic reduction in seed and capitula weights and also grain yield of safflower. For example, grain yiled of safflower at 16 milk thistle m-2 was about 41 percent lower than control (no-weed).ConclusionIn general, it can be concluded that potassium application at all tested levels increased grain yield and yield components in both safflower and milk thistle, with the highest yield achieved at 136 kg K₂O ha⁻¹. Safflower consistently outperformed milk thistle across all potassium levels, showing a stronger response to increasing potassium fertilizer. Overall, it seems safflower appears to have a higher ability to absorb potassium at lower levels of potassium fertilizer application than milk thistle, and high potassium application is more beneficial to milk thistle. Therefore, adjusting fertilizer application rates should be considered in fertilizer management in safflower fields.
