IntroductionCoriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is a widely cultivated herb of economic and medicinal importance, commonly used in culinary applications as a spice and flavouring agent. In Iran, coriander cultivation plays a significant role in the country's agricultural economy, particularly in semi-arid regions such as Mashhad. The productivity of coriander is heavily influenced by soil fertility and nutrient management practices. Chemical fertilizers, although effective in providing essential nutrients, have been linked to environmental degradation, soil acidification, and long-term decline in soil fertility. On the other hand, organic fertilizers, such as animal manure and slurry, offer a sustainable alternative by improving soil physical structure, enhancing microbial activity, and gradually releasing nutrients. However, the efficacy of organic fertilizers alone or in combination with chemical fertilizers on coriander growth and yield remains under-explored in Mashhad’s climatic conditions. This study aims to fill this gap by systematically evaluating the effects of different fertilizer treatments on seed yield, yield components, and essential oil content of coriander.Materials and MethodsThe field experiment was conducted during the 2023 growing season at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad research farm, located in a semi-arid climatic zone characterized by hot summers and cold winters. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with seven treatments and three replications. The treatments included: 1) control (no fertilizer), 2) animal manure (composted cow manure at 5 ton ha-1), 3) slurry (obtained through water extraction from manure), 4) chemical fertilizer (NPK at recommended rates), 5) a combination of 50% animal manure + 50% chemical fertilizer, 6) a combination of 50% animal manure + 50% slurry, and 7) a combination of 50% slurry+ 50% chemical fertilizer. Standard agronomic practices, including soil preparation, irrigation, and pest control, were applied uniformly across all treatments. Key growth parameters, including plant height, number of primary and secondary branches, number of umbels and umbellets per plant, seed number per plant, seed weight, fresh and dry biomass yield, and harvest index, were recorded at the flowering and seed maturity stages. Results and DiscussionAnalysis of variance revealed significant differences among treatments for most measured traits, indicating that nutrient source and application rate substantially influenced coriander growth and yield. The highest fresh and dry biomass production was observed in the treatment combining 50% animal manure and 50% chemical fertilizer (7130 and 1490 g.m-2, respectively), highlighting a synergistic interaction between organic and inorganic nutrient sources. This combination likely enhanced nutrient availability while improving soil physical and biological conditions, leading to superior vegetative growth and reproductive development. Slurry treatment significantly increased seed number (88%), and the number of umbels (84%) compared to the control, suggesting improved nutrient solubility and uptake efficiency. Chemical fertilizer alone yielded the highest number of umbellets (306 per plant), branches (13.67 per plant), and seed weight per plant (12.48 g per plant), highlighting the rapid nutrient release and availability provided by inorganic fertilizers. However, the tallest plants were recorded in the sole animal manure treatment (66.67 cm), which also showed the highest harvest index (47.78%) after the control (49.75%), indicating that organic fertilizers can promote balanced vegetative growth and partitioning of assimilates to reproductive organs. These findings align with previous research emphasizing the benefits of integrated nutrient management for sustainable crop production. Additionally, the use of animal manure and its derivatives contributes to enhanced soil microbial activity, improved water retention, and long-term soil fertility. The study demonstrates that while chemical fertilizers can quickly boost yield components, organic fertilizers are essential for maintaining soil health and ensuring sustainable productivity in the long run.ConclusionThe results of this study indicate that integrating animal manure with chemical fertilizers can significantly enhance the growth, yield components, and biomass production of coriander under Mashhad’s semi-arid climatic conditions. The combined application strategy not only improved seed yield and vegetative growth but also contributed to better soil health compared to the use of sole chemical fertilizers. Slurry emerged as a promising alternative nutrient source with notable effects on yield parameters. Sustainable fertilization strategies involving both organic and inorganic sources are recommended for coriander cultivation in similar agro-ecological zones to achieve higher productivity and environmental sustainability. Further long-term research is warranted to evaluate the dynamics of soil health, economic viability, and potential ecological impacts of these fertilization practices.

IntroductionOne way to increase seed yield of plants is to use amino acids as biostimulants and growth regulators. Amino acids are the main components of proteins. About 20 types of important amino acids are involved in the synthesis of proteins in the cell. Amino acids play essential roles in plant metabolism, growth, and development. Among them, glutamine is particularly important because it serves as a key intermediate linking carbon and nitrogen metabolism. It also functions as a major nitrogen donor and precursor for the biosynthesis of several amino acids and other nitrogen-containing compounds, thereby contributing to numerous physiological and metabolic processes in plants. Another amino acid that can lead to improved performance in plants under stress and non-stress conditions is serine. The amino acid serine is essential for some cellular processes, including protein synthesis and some amino acids such as glycine, cysteine and methionine in plants. In order to investigate the effect of amino acids on improving quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) grain yield, an experiment was conducted in 2013 in the laboratory and research farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Shahrood University of Technology.Materials and MethodsThe experiment was conducted as a factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments consisted of two factors: seed pretreatment and foliar application. Seed pretreatment was applied at four levels: no pretreatment, distilled water, serine, and glutamine, with serine and glutamine applied at a concentration of 200 mg L⁻¹. Foliar application was also performed at four levels: distilled water (control), serine, glutamine, and a combination of serine and glutamine, each applied at a concentration of 200 mg L⁻¹. Pretreatment of seeds with the above-mentioned substances and concentrations was carried out for three hours, observing the principles of seed aeration. After that, the seeds were dried in the shade and used to continue the experiment and measure the traits. Foliar application with the desired concentrations was carried out before flowering of the plant under suitable conditions so that the leaves were completely wet. Two weeks after foliar application, the measurement of the traits began. Results and DiscussionThe results showed that foliar application of glutamine alone and combined application of serine and glutamine resulted in a significant increase of 7.41 and 8.58 percent in relative leaf water content compared to the control, respectively. Four treatment combinations, pretreatment and application with serine, pretreatment and application with glutamine, pretreatment with serine application with serine and glutamine, pretreatment with glutamine and application with these two substances increased the weight of 1000 grains in the range of 10.27 to 12.20 percent and increased the number of grains in the panicle in the range of 9.10 to 11.97 percent. Combined foliar application of serine and glutamine as well as application of glutamine and serine alone resulted in an increase of 0.82, 0.59, and 0.52 percent in grain protein, respectively. The highest seed yield was obtained with the application of pretreatment and foliar application of serine, pretreatment and foliar application of glutamine and pretreatment with glutamine along with combined foliar application of serine and glutamine, which showed an increase of 30.52, 30.91, and 31.02 percent compared to the control, respectively.ConclusionFinally, within the scope of the research conducted, the use of pretreatment of seeds with serine and glutamine along with foliar application of these two substances is recommended to increase protein and seed yield of quinoa. When each of these two amino acids was used as a pretreatment and foliar application, they showed a greater effect on the aforementioned traits. Among the four foliar application treatments, the combined application of serine and glutamine performed better. Finally, within the scope of this study, the use of the two amino acids serine and glutamine (200 mg L-1) as foliar application is recommended to improve protein content and quinoa seed yield.

IntroductionFlax (Linum usitatissimum) is an annual plant with a stem height of 30 to 50 centimeters. Unlike fiber flax, oil flax has a stem with several branches. Oil flax seeds contain 22% protein, 6.5% crude fiber and 30 to 40% oil. They are of particular importance due to the presence of some essential amino acids such as lecithin 3.8%, methionine 2.3% and tryptophan 1.9%. One way to increase flax yield is to apply agronomic management practices such as appropriate planting date and optimal nutrient intake. On the other hand, although flax is adaptable to adverse environmental conditions and lands with low fertility levels, and accordingly its cultivation can be expanded in different agro-ecological conditions, the area under cultivation of this plant is very small. Considering the role of Thiobacillus bacteria in the oxidation and dissolution of nutrients, it seems that the use of these bacteria along with organic fertilizer can enable the use of available nutrients and lead to improvement of the physicochemical properties and biological activities of the soil. Accordingly, the purpose of this experiment is to study the effect of Thiobacillus bacteria and different levels of sulfur and organic fertilizer on flax yield and yield components. Materials and MethodsThis experiment was conducted at Shahid Chamran University, Ahvaz, in the 1401-1402 crop year to investigate the effect of Thiobacillus bacteria, sulfur application, and organic fertilizer on the yield and growth of oilseed flax under Ahvaz conditions. The experiment was conducted as a factorial design based on randomized complete blocks with 3 replications. The first factor included different levels of sulfur and Thiobacillus at 5 levels including: control (without the use of sulfur and Thiobacillus), 200 kg of sulfur per hectare, 400 kg of sulfur per hectare, 100 kg of sulfur per hectare with Thiobacillus bacterial inoculum, and 200 kg of sulfur per hectare with Thiobacillus bacterial inoculum. The second factor included the use of organic fertilizer at three levels: control (no use of organic fertilizer), 6 tons of vermicompost, and 6 tons of sugarcane bagasse compost. The measured traits included yield and yield components. Results and DiscussionThe results showed that, among the different organic fertilizer treatments, the control (no organic fertilizer) produced the lowest number of branches per plant (7.03), capsules per plant (185), and seeds per capsule (7.3). In contrast, the application of 6 t ha⁻¹ vermicompost resulted in the highest number of branches per plant (7.9), number of secondary branches (1.34), 1000-seed weight (1.6 g), and grain yield (3218 kg ha⁻¹). In the study of different levels of sulfur and Thiobacillus application, it was found that the lowest average number of branches (6.4 branches), number of secondary branches (26.2 branches), number of seeds per capsule (1.7 seeds), and weight of 1,000 seeds (5.8 g) were related to the control treatment (no use of sulfur and Thiobacillus). The highest number of branches (7.9 branches) and grain yield (3838 kg ha-1) were related to the treatment of 200 kg sulfur ha-1 + Thiobacillus bacterial inoculum. In the study of different levels of sulfur and Thiobacillus application, it was found that the lowest average number of branches (6.4 branches), number of secondary branches (26.2 branches), number of seeds per capsule (1.7 seeds), and weight of 1,000 seeds (5.8 grams) were related to the control treatment (no use of sulfur and Thiobacillus). The highest number of branches (7.9 branches) and grain yield (3838 kg ha-1) were related to the treatment of 200 kg sulfur ha-1 + Thiobacillus bacterial inoculum.ConclusionTherefore, the application of vermicompost among organic fertilizer levels and the treatment of 200 kg sulfur per hectare + Thiobacillus inoculum among sulfur and Thiobacillus levels had a positive effect, and the combined application of this treatment led to improved seed yield and yield components of oilseed flax.

Introduction Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is a strategic industrial crop, vital as the world's primary source of natural fiber and a significant source of edible oil and animal feed. Despite its importance to Iran's economy, a substantial "yield gap" exists between farmer-achieved yields and potential yields under optimal conditions. This gap, largely from suboptimal management, is a critical concern as Iran seeks to regain self-sufficiency in cotton production. While other regions have been studied, the specific agro-ecological conditions and local practices in Behshahr County, Mazandaran, necessitate a dedicated regional investigation. This study aimed to quantify the irrigated cotton yield gap in the Miankaleh region and identify the relative contribution of the most significant management factors using the Comparative Performance Analysis (CPA) method. Materials and MethodsThis survey-based research was conducted over two consecutive growing seasons (2021–2022) across 88 irrigated cotton farms in the Miankaleh district, selected to represent local diversity in management and yield. Data were collected via farmer interviews and field visits, covering farm characteristics, crop establishment, nutrition management, crop protection strategies, and irrigation practices. The Comparative Performance Analysis (CPA) method was employed. A stepwise multiple regression model was developed using SAS software to establish a quantitative function relating final yield to management factors. Qualitative variables were coded as binary (0/1). This model was used to estimate the potential yield (using optimal values for significant variables) and compare it to the average actual yield (using mean observed values), thereby quantifying the total yield gap and the contribution of each limiting factor. Results and DisscusionThe average actual seed cotton yield was 2103 kg ha-1, while the estimated potential yield was 4620 kg ha-1, revealing a substantial yield gap of 2518 kg ha-1. This indicates farmers are realizing only 45.5% of their potential, leaving a 54.5% manageable yield gap. The wide yield variation (649 to 4370 kg ha-1) confirmed the profound impact of management. The stepwise regression analysis (r = 0.70) identified four key management variables as the primary determinants. Pest management emerged as the most critical domain. The "number of pesticide applications" was the single most important factor, explaining 55% of the total yield gap. Its strong positive correlation indicated that higher yields were associated with more frequent spraying, a reactive response to severe pest pressure (especially cotton bollworm) reported in 90% of farms. The second most important factor was the "amount of top-dress nitrogen," accounting for 36% of the gap. Its positive coefficient confirmed that current nitrogen application rates were, on average, suboptimal. Conversely, the "use of Proclaim Fit" (6% share) and the "use of Fenproxymate (Ortus)" (3% share) both showed a significant negative correlation with yield. This paradox was not due to pesticide inefficiency. Instead, these chemicals served as "proxy variables", indicating a critical flaw in management timing. Farmers used these specific chemicals as a late-stage response to severe infestations, after economic damage thresholds had been exceeded. ConclusionIn conclusion, the cotton yield gap in the Behshahr region is substantial at 54.5% (2518 kg ha-1). This gap is primarily driven by two key management domains: suboptimal pest management (collectively accounting for 64% of the gap) and inadequate nitrogen fertilization (36%). The pest management issue is systemic, characterized by severe outbreaks and a reactive, poorly-timed control strategy. To effectively close this gap, agricultural extension programs must prioritize farmer education in two main areas. First, a shift from reactive spraying to proactive Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential, including training in field scouting, economic thresholds, and proper pesticide selection. Second, promoting balanced, soil-test-based nitrogen application strategies is crucial for optimizing plant nutrition. These targeted interventions offer the most practical pathway to enhancing cotton productivity in the region.

IntroductionQuinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) is an annual plant of the legume family, native to Latin America. In addition to its high nutritional value, this plant has a remarkable ability to tolerate a variety of abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, and cold, as well as to grow on marginal lands. Due to its relative tolerance to drought and salinity stresses, extensive genetic diversity, and ability to adapt to different climatic conditions and high water use efficiency, it is considered a suitable plant for the exploitation of limited water resources and saline soils. In terms of nutritional value, quinoa seeds, the main product of this plant, contain between 14 and 20% protein and are rich sources of essential amino acids such as lysine and methionine, substances that are found in low amounts in most cereals.Materials and MethodsIn order to investigate the effect of different plant densities and cultivars of quinoa on growth, physiology and forage yield, a field experiment was conducted as a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with four replications in the fall and winter of the 2023-2024 crop year at the research farm of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources University of Khuzestan. Experimental factors included plant density at three levels (30, 50 and 70 plants m-2) and quinoa cultivars (Rahmat and Sadooq). The evaluated traits were chlorophyll a, b, carotenoid, spad number, leaf area index, forage protein percentage, forage protein yield and forage yield. Results and DiscussionIn this study, neither planting density nor cultivar had a significant effect on chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoid content, or SPAD values. However, analysis of variance showed that planting density significantly affected leaf area index, forage protein concentration, and forage protein yield, whereas cultivar significantly affected forage protein yield and dry forage yield. In addition, the interaction between planting density and cultivar had a significant effect on forage protein concentration and forage protein yield. The results showed that the highest and lowest of leaf area index with an average of (3.87) and (3.11) were observed in the density treatment of 70 and 30 plants per square meter, respectively. Also, the highest percentage of forage protein (6.35 and 6.03 percent, respectively) was observed in the density of 30 plants per square meter and the lowest were (4.10 and 4.88 percent, respectively) in the density of 70 plants per square meter in two varieties of Sadooq and Rahmat. The highest forage protein yield (1163 kg ha-1) was observed at densities of 30 plants per square meter, in Sadooq cultivar and the lowest (540 kg ha-1) was obtained at densities of 70 plants per square meter, in Rahmat cultivar. Also, the highest dry forage yield with an average of 18259 kg ha-1 was observed in the Sadooq cultivar and the lowest dry forage yield with an average of 10633 kg ha-1 was observed in the Rahmat cultivar. Therefore, the significant difference between the two studied cultivars were present. ConclusionIncreasing plant density to the optimum level, without creating intense intraspecific competition, by making optimal use of environmental resources such as light, water, and nutrients, improved leaf area index and increased forage yield in quinoa. The results showed that choosing the right cultivar plays an important role in forage yield, especially through its effect on maturity time and weed resistance. Significant differences in forage yield were observed among the evaluated cultivars, with Sadooq producing the highest forage yield. These findings indicate that selecting an appropriate cultivar in combination with an optimal planting density can be an effective strategy for improving quinoa forage production.

IntroductionWheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a strategic global cereal, providing over 20% of human calorie intake. However, climate change, increased drought frequency, and declining irrigation water resources seriously threaten sustainable wheat production. In many agricultural regions, including Iran, drought stress is a primary factor limiting wheat yield. Therefore, finding biological strategies to enhance wheat's tolerance to water stress is a research priority in sustainable agriculture. Utilizing low-cost and environmentally friendly approaches to increase plant resilience to environmental stresses is essential. Among these, employing beneficial rhizosymbionts like Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR), such as Pseudomonas and Azospirillum, has garnered significant research interest. AMF form extensive hyphal networks in the soil, dramatically increasing the root absorption surface area and improving plant access to water and less mobile nutrients like phosphorus. PGPR enhance plant growth and abiotic stress tolerance through various mechanisms, including producing plant growth hormones (e.g., auxins), synthesizing siderophores, fixing nitrogen, and inducing systemic resistance. While many studies have focused on the individual effects of AMF or PGPR, research on their combined impact on wheat growth and performance under limited irrigation condition is scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the individual and combined effects of mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting bacteria on photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzymes, biochemical resistance traits, and ultimately, the yield of wheat under different irrigation regimes.Materials and MethodsThis research was conducted during the 2021-2022 growing season at a research farm in the Arshaq region, Meshgin Shahr County, Ardabil Province, Iran. The experiment was arranged as a factorial based on a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The first factor was biofertilizer type at four levels: control, mycorrhizal fungi (Rhizophagus intraradices), PGPR (Pseudomonas fluorescens and Azospirillum brasilense), and a combination of both mycorrhizal fungi and PGPR. The second factor was irrigation regime at three levels: no irrigation (rainfed), irrigation at 50% of plant water requirement, and full irrigation (100% water requirement). Measured traits included root colonization percentage, chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoid content, activities of the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), number of grains per spike, thousand-kernel weight, and grain yield. Root colonization was assessed using staining and microscopic examination. Photosynthetic pigments were extracted with acetone and measured spectrophotometrically. Enzyme activities were determined using specific spectrophotometric assays: CAT activity by monitoring H₂O₂ decomposition at 240 nm, POX activity by monitoring guaiacol oxidation at 470 nm, and SOD activity by measuring the inhibition of nitroblue tetrazolium reduction at 560 nm.Results and DiscussionThe analysis of variance indicated that the main effects of biofertilizers and irrigation regimes, as well as their interaction, were significant for all measured traits. The highest root colonization (79.6%) was observed in the full irrigation × combined biofertilizer treatment. Drought stress reduces carbohydrate allocation to roots, limiting the carbon source for fungi and hindering colonization. Biofertilizers, especially the combination, provided direct inoculation and improved the root environment, facilitating higher colonization. The maximum chlorophyll a (2.55 mg g-1), chlorophyll b (0.85 mg g-1), and carotenoid (0.204 mg g-1) contents were recorded in the full irrigation × combined biofertilizer treatment. The minimum values were under severe drought without biofertilizers. Drought degrades chloroplasts and activates chlorophyll-degrading enzymes. Biofertilizers, by improving water and nutrient (especially phosphorus) uptake, helped maintain pigment synthesis and protect the photosynthetic apparatus from oxidative damage. The highest activities of CAT (32.5 U mg-1), POX (4.88 U mg-1), and SOD (28.8 U mg-1) were found in the no irrigation × no biofertilizer treatment. Conversely, the lowest enzyme activities were consistently observed in the full irrigation × combined biofertilizer treatment. Elevated antioxidant enzyme activity under drought stress without biofertilizers is a physiological response to high oxidative stress caused by increased Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production. The application of biofertilizers, particularly the combination, mitigated water and nutrient deficits, thereby reducing ROS generation and the need for high antioxidant enzyme activity, indicating better physiological equilibrium. Increased significantly from 2501.7 kg ha-1 under severe drought without biofertilizers to 4891.6 kg ha-1 under full irrigation with combined biofertilizers. This demonstrates that the synergistic effect of AMF and PGPR in improving water relations, nutrient status, and oxidative stress management translated into superior yield performance.ConclusionThe findings of this study demonstrate that the combined application of mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting bacteria is an effective strategy for mitigating the adverse effects of drought stress and enhancing wheat yield. This biological combination acted synergistically to significantly increase root colonization, preserve the photosynthetic system by maintaining higher chlorophyll and carotenoid levels, and reduce oxidative stress by modulating antioxidant enzyme activities. These improvements ultimately led to a significant increase in yield components. Therefore, employing these bio-inputs can serve as a sustainable and eco-friendly approach, paving the way for reduced chemical fertilizer use, increased plant resilience to water scarcity, and enhanced food security.

Introduction Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) is one of the most important medicinal plant. It has high demand in Asia in the treatment of gastrointestinal problems and is used as condiments. It is also recognized for possessing powerful immunomodulatory properties. Cuminum cyminum is an important plant due to export benefits, its cultivation utilizes and revitalizes arid and semi-arid lands, and low water demand. Considering the importance of Cuminum cyminum as a medicinal plant, therefore, it is essential to better understand the determining factors on the yield of cumin. Therefore, proper nutritional management through utilizing organic and chemical fertilizers is considered essential in growing Cuminum cyminum for exploiting the potential of the environment and achieving maximum yield. Organic inputs can guarantee both agricultural production and nature conservation. The current approach is to find an appropriate substitute of chemical fertilizers by organic compounds that are cost-effective and eco-friendly. This study aimed to improve the yield and biodiversity by selecting the most appropriate way of medicinal plants cultivation that in addition to creating plants with high quantitative and qualitative yield, can increase the profitability through enhanced nitrogen use efficiency. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of biochar, and chemical fertilizers (NPK) on Cumin's growth and yield. This study provided physiological insights into the agronomic benefit mechanism of biochar utilization.Materials and Methods In order to investigate the effects of biochar, NPK complete fertilizer, and their combination on the yield and yield components of two local cumin population (Cuminum cyminum L), a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications at the Agricultural Research Field of the University of Birjand at 32°53' N and longitude of 59◦ and 13 East and at an altitude of 1480 m a.s.l. Birjand, Iran. The experimental treatments consisted of three levels of chemical fertilizer (20-20-20 NPK at 0, 40, and 80 kg ha-1), two levels of biochar (0 and 10 ton ha-1), and two local cumin cultivars (Khusf and Sarayan). Before preparing the seed bed, for measuring the physical and chemical properties and other required parameters of the soil, sampling was done from 0 to 30 cm depth from the experimental site. The measured traits included the morphophysiological traits, yield and yield components. Results and DiscussionThe results indicated that biochar and NPK fertilizer significantly affected the studied morphological and yield traits, and there was a statistically significant difference between the levels of biochar and NPK fertilizer treatments. Significant differences were also observed between the two cumin cultivars. The Khusf cultivar exhibited superior growth and yield traits compared to the Sarayan cultivar. The highest grain and biological yields were obtained with the Khusf cultivar under the combined application of 10 ton ha-1 of biochar and the application of 40 kg ha-1 of NPK. Furthermore, no significant difference was observed between the 40 and 80 kg ha-1 of NPK fertilizer application rates. Therefore, the application of 40 kg ha-1 of NPK is recommended for optimal yield, reduced input costs, and minimized environmental impact. Conclusion The expansion of intensive crop production systems for long terms caused several problems, such as the reduction of biodiversity and the environmental contamination. The increasing concern regarding the negative impacts of these conventional agricultural methods on the ecosystems suggests the exploration of alternative methods endowed with improved efficiency and sustainability as well as high productivity. Application of organic fertilizers may be one appropriate way to reach this goal. The present experiment findings suggest that biochar application, in combination with reduced chemical fertilizer inputs, offers a promising approach for the sustainable production of medicinal plants while minimizing adverse environmental impacts.

IntroductionGuar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.) is a highly important drought-tolerant legume crop with considerable potential for cultivation in arid and semi-arid regions. Beyond its intrinsic value as a food and forage crop, guar seed contains galactomannan gum, which is extensively utilized across the food, pharmaceutical, textile, paper, and oil industries. Expanding guar cultivation in water-limited environments like Sistan and Baluchestan Province, particularly the Saravan region, can significantly contribute to crop diversification and sustainable production systems. However, this region’s hot and dry climate, coupled with limited water resources and temperature fluctuations, strongly influences guar’s vegetative and reproductive growth phases. Planting date is a critical agronomic factor determining the environmental conditions experienced by the crop. Delayed planting often exposes reproductive stages to severe terminal drought and high temperatures. Native landraces, having evolved under specific environmental constraints, are valuable genetic resources that possess desirable traits for adaptation, earliness, and yield stability. Identifying the optimum planting date and the most adaptable native landrace is therefore essential for mitigating risks. Consequently, this study aimed to evaluate the interaction effects of planting dates and native landraces on guar phenology, yield components, and seed yield under Saravan’s climatic conditions.Materials and MethodsThe field experiment was conducted during the 2024–2025 cropping season in Saravan, Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Iran. A factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications was implemented. The experimental factors comprised three planting dates (March 6, April 6, and May 5; corresponding approximately to 15 Esfand, 15 Farvardin, and 15 Ordibehesht) and three native guar landraces (Garmbit, Saravan, and Sarbaz). The experimental site featured a sandy loam soil with an electrical conductivity of 1.9 dS m⁻¹, a pH of 8.7, and 0.65% organic carbon. Soil total nitrogen was 0.07%, while available phosphorus and potassium were 12 and 210 mg kg⁻¹, respectively. Standard land preparation, including primary plowing, perpendicular disking, and leveling, was performed. Fertilization was applied based on soil test results, and all plots received uniform irrigation and standard agronomic management. Phenological traits, including vegetative and reproductive growth durations, were meticulously recorded. Furthermore, leaf area, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight, and final seed yield (kg ha⁻¹) were evaluated. Data were subjected to analysis of variance, and treatment means were compared using appropriate mean comparison procedures to assess main and interaction effects. Results and Discussion The results demonstrated that planting date, landrace, and their interaction significantly affected all evaluated traits, including phenology, yield components, and final seed yield. This significant interaction implies that the native landraces exhibited distinct responses to planting date variations. The Sarbaz landrace displayed the highest yield potential under early planting conditions, producing a maximum seed yield of 2689 kg ha⁻¹ on March 6. This indicates its substantial genetic potential to exploit favorable early-season environmental conditions. However, its performance declined drastically under delayed planting. At the May 5 planting date, its seed yield dropped to 1033 kg ha⁻¹, representing a severe 62% reduction compared to early planting. This vulnerability was linked to the exposure of its critical reproductive stages to high terminal temperatures. In contrast, the Garmbit landrace exhibited exceptional yield stability across all planting dates. Its seed yield decreased from 2393 kg ha⁻¹ under the first planting date to 1535 kg ha⁻¹ under delayed planting, equating to a moderate reduction of only 36%. The superior stress tolerance of Garmbit was primarily attributed to its early maturity (ranging from 84 to 94 days), which facilitated a stress-escape strategy before the onset of severe late-season heat. Additionally, Garmbit successfully maintained an active photosynthetic source through a stable leaf area and preserved essential yield components, such as pod and seed production, under stress. Conversely, the Saravan landrace generally showed lower productivity and was more susceptible to terminal stress due to its later maturity. Conclusion The findings underscore the critical importance of matching planting dates with the specific genetic and phenological characteristics of guar landraces. The earliest planting date, March 6, provided the optimal environmental window for maximizing yield potential, particularly for the high-yielding but sensitive Sarbaz landrace. Thus, early planting of Sarbaz is strongly recommended when the goal is to achieve maximum productivity under favorable conditions. On the other hand, Garmbit was definitively identified as the most stable and adaptable landrace across varying planting dates. Its inherent early maturity, effective terminal stress-escape mechanism, and robust capacity to maintain leaf area and critical yield components minimized yield losses under delayed planting. Therefore, Garmbit is highly recommended for risk management, climate resilience, and sustainable guar production in Saravan and similar arid regions of Sistan and Baluchestan. Future breeding programs should continue to leverage these native genetic resources to enhance drought tolerance and yield stability.
