این مطالعه با هدف بررسی تأثیر قارچ اندوفیت Penicillium chrysogenum، جداشده از بذر گیاه مقاوم به شوری کوشیا (Bassia scoparia)، بر بهبود به تحمل شوری در ذرت (Zea mays) انجام شد. پس از شناسایی مولکولی قارچ، تحمل آن به شوری در محیط کشت دارای NaCl (صفر تا چهار مولار) ارزیابی شد. بیشترین رشد قارچ در غلظت یک مولار NaCl مشاهده گردید. بذور ذرت با اسپورهای قارچ تلقیح و در شرایط بدون شوری و شرایط تنش شوری (۱۵۰ میلیمولار NaCl) در آزمایشگاه، اتاقک رشد و گلخانه کشت شدند. نتایج نشان داد که تلقیح قارچ موجب افزایش معنیدار طول ریشه و وزن تر و خشک گیاه شد. در گلخانه، وزن تر اندام هوایی و ریشه در گیاهان تلقیحشده بهترتیب ۲۲۳ و ۱۳۸ درصد افزایش یافت. امّا تحت تنش خشکی، قارچ اثر منفی بر رشد ذرت داشت. هیچ تفاوت معنیداری در غلظت سدیم، پتاسیم و پارامترهای فتوسنتزی بین گیاهان تلقیحشده و شاهد مشاهده نشد. به نظر میرسد که سازوکار اثر قارچ شامل تنظیم غیرمستقیم فیزیولوژیکی مانند بهبود جذب عناصر غذایی، تولید ترکیبات محرک رشد یا تنظیم بیان ژنهای مرتبط با تحمل تنش است. این تحقیق، استفاده از اندوفیتهای بومی مانند P. chrysogenum را بهعنوان راهکاری زیستی برای بهبود عملکرد گیاهان در خاکهای شور پیشنهاد میکند.
